Finance Committee Chair Suggests FHA Could be Next Countrywide

Posted To: MND NewsWireOn Wednesday the House Financial Services Committee held the first of a scheduled series of hearings on the financial condition of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) . A memo released by the Committees chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) says that the FHAs single-family insurance fund which insures more than $1 trillion worth of home mortgages , has a negative economic value of $16.3 billion, according to an independent actuarial report released in November which means that if the FHA stopped writing new business today, it could not cover the losses anticipated on loans it has already insured. Granted, in some instances, there are other considerations of sufficient size to throw that conventional wisdom out the door, but all other things being equal, it generally holds true. Looking at the last part of January and the first part of February, we may be able to see some of this phenomenon in play, but certainly, we know weve had other market moving considerations. Through whatever combination of post-NFP cooling down and "other considerations," stocks and bonds have both been consolidating their trading ranges for the past two days.
