APD Officer Performs CPR and Saves Life of 2-Day Old Newborn

APD Officer Performs CPR and Saves Life of 2-Day Old NewbornOn November 10, 2012 at 10:11 p.m. APD Officer Brian Pitzer heard a call come in of an infant that was not breathing and was choking. He immediate volunteered for the call because he was so close and was able to respond within seconds. Upon arrival, Officer Pitzer could see a large group of people standing in the courtyard. A man immediately ran to him screaming, “She’s not breathing you have to do something!” Officer Pitzer ran towards the small crowd and was handed a 2-day old female infant. Officer Pitzer saw that the infant was not breathing and that her face was turning purple. He cradled the infant’s tiny head in his hand and began to give small chest compressions with two fingers. He then opened her airway and used his finger to clear thick mucus substance from her mouth. The infant eventually began to cough and take small gasps of air as Officer Pitzer held her to his chest. AFD arrived shortly thereafter and transported the infant to UNMH for observation. Pediatric doctors advised that the infant choked on baby formula that was not properly blended. The baby made a full recovery and was returned home to her grateful family. Today Mayor Richard J. Berry honored Officer Pitzer with the Friday’s Heroes Award. Officer Pitzer has also been nominated for the Lifesaving Award.** Albuquerque Police Department **
