Large Gila New Mexico wildfire grows to 82,000 acres

The Gila National Forest has three million, three hundred thousand acres. There is more publicly owned land than any other national forest outside of Alaska. Located in southwest New Mexico the Gila Forest contains the largest wilderness in the southwest, called the Gila Wilderness. There are six distinct plant communities and peaks ranging from 4,200 - to 11,000 feet.

At the time of this writing there is a massive wildfire that has reached 82,252 acres and has burned 12 homes near Gila. It is called the Whitewater-Baldy fire and the effects from the smoke can be seen within Albuquerque and the usually clear Sandias. The town of Mogollon is under a volunteer evacuation. Winds are expected to shift from a southwesterly wind to more of a southern wind.  At this point the fire is zero percent contained.
